Avoiding and Recovering from Common Postdoc Mistakes

Place: Room N110 (Rädler chair), Faculty of Physics, LMU main building

Specifically targeted towards students interested in grad school and/or postdoc appointments, this workshop will focus on the current and expanding crisis in the job and career market for STEM professionals. We will investigate how early-career scientists and engineers can best prepare for this challenge, and we will demonstrate how to orchestrate a personal career plan and develop a Plan B and Plan C for contingencies. We will discuss what early-career scientists and engineers should do now to enhance their CVs and research reputations, and what they should look for in and how they can leverage their grad school experience or a Postdoc appointment to that can set themselves up for success in the field. Speaker: Alaina G. Levine is an award-winning entrepreneur, science journalist, STEM careers consultant, professional speaker and corporate comedian. Her book, Networking for Nerds, was published by Wiley in 2015, and was named one of the Top 5 Books of 2015 by Physics Today. As President of Quantum Success Solutions, she has been advising scientists and engineers about their careers for over 16 years. She has given over 650 workshops for clients in the US, EU, Canada, and Mexico, and is the author of over 250 articles in publications like Science, Nature, World Economic Forum, Smithsonian, Scientific American, and IEEE Spectrum.
