Welcome!

Dr. Christoph Westerhausen joins CeNS as a new extraordinary member

Dr. Christoph Westerhausen earned a diploma in physics with specialization in magneto-optical materials and biological physics as well as the Bavarian state examination for mathematics and physics teachers in 2008. Between 2009 and 2012 he worked at the University of Augsburg, the University hospital in Mannheim and the Boston University in the groups of Prof. S. Schneider and Prof. M. Schneider and received his PhD from the University of Augsburg in 2012. As a project leader in the industrial environment at ‘Woelfel Engineering’ in Höchberg, he worked in the field of applied acoustics in room and building acoustics and investigated the infrasound emissions of wind turbines.

Returning to academia in 2014, he started a junior research group in the lab of Prof. A. Wixforth at the University of Augsburg. Christoph has meanwhile received national and international funding from the German Research Foundation, the Bavaria California Technology Center, the EU in the framework of a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Innovative Training Network, and other sources. His research group works at the interface of physics, biology and medicine and focuses on the physics of cellular interaction in vitro and using model systems. The current projects are ranging from systems of lipid membranes interacting with external force fields, nanoparticles or enzymes, over cell-substrate and cell-cell interaction for novel biomedical applications, to cell stimulation and creation of cellular networks on a chip. For this purposes, he and his group develop hybrid systems employing surface acoustic waves.
