New flexibility

Graphene Research

Pentacen semiconductor film

Flexible graphene semiconductor films in photovoltaic devices and screens – the EU fosters the development with an 847.000 Euro grant. The NIM scientist Dr. Bert Nickel collaborates with Prof. Andrey Turchanin, Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena, on this EU Graphene Flagship.

The synthesis of such new and variably applicable materials is generously granted by the EU. The international project "H2O - Heterostructures of 2D Materials and Organic Semiconductor Nanolayers" will start under the leadership of Prof. Andrey Turchanin, Institute for Physical Chemistry, Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena, and CeNS member Dr. Bert Nickel, Soft Condensed Matter Group of the Physics Department, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, from January 2018 on for a funding period of three years. The project is embedded in the Graphene Flagship of the FLAG-ERA EU program.

Miracle material

In this EU project, Turchanin and Nickel will enhance their Pentacen semiconductor material by modification with graphene to build only 50 nanometer thick organic semiconductor films. The new Material will be conductive, switchable and ecologically sustainable, as well as flexible. This gives the potential to use it for several applications ranging from flexible smartphone displays and portable electronic devices to photovoltaics. "There are many implementation possibilities, and it is great to have the research association SolTech with focus on photovoltaics around." explains Nickel.
Base semiconductor material is Pentacen, already granted with a patent and published in
Advanced Materials. Stacks of semiconductor material and 2D-material like the "miracle material" graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides will improve the properties of this new material.
