Philip Tinnefeld wins ERC starting grant

CeNS professor successful in EU-wide competition for research funds

The European Research Council (ERC) has again granted one of the prestigious Starting Independent Researcher Grants to a researcher of the Center for NanoScience (CeNS) at LMU Munich. Prof. Philip Tinnefeld convinced the peer review panel of the ERC in the category "Life Sciences" with his research proposal called SIMBA which stands for "Single-molecule bioassays at elevated concentrations" and will now receive a sum of about 1.5 Mio for the next 5 years.

Philip Tinnefeld earned his PhD from the University of Heidelberg and worked as a PostDoc in groups of Shimon Weiss (UCLA), Markus Sauer (Heidelberg) and Frans C. DeSchryver (Leuven). From 2003 to 2007 he was head of the Single-Molecule Fluorescence Group in the lab of Markus Sauer at the University of Bielefeld. In 2007, Philip Tinnefeld was appointed associate professor for biophysics at LMU Munich at the Chair of applied physics of Hermann Gaub.

Philip Tinnefeld is already the second winner of an ERC grant within CeNS in 2010, following Dieter Braun who was successful in this year's call in the category "Physical Science and Engineering". Furthermore, two other CeNS members were awarded with this prestigious grant already in 2009: Jens Michaelis (LMU Munich) and Matthias Schneider (at that time at the University of Augsburg).

ERC Starting Independent Researcher Grants (ERC Starting Grants) aim to support up-and-coming research leaders who are about to establish or consolidate a proper research team and to start conducting independent research in Europe.
