Junior Nanotech Network (JNN)
A Self-Organized PhD Students Exchange Program
The aim of the Junior Nanotech Network (JNN) is to exchange knowledge of world class nanoscience and nanobioscience between graduate students from different institutions worldwide. This network has been organized in 2006 and 2008 by junior nanoscientists from CeNS (Munich) together with their partners from
McGill University (Canada). In 2010, the JNN will be extended to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (USA) by a cooperation with the
Center for the Physics of the Living Cell (CPLC).
The JNN project takes advantage of local expertise and facilities and aims at initiating scientific and personal exchange between junior nano-researchers in Germany and partner institutions abroad, linking the research efforts in the field of nanoscience of the two universities and fostering the interaction between the partnering countries. The 20 participants at each exchange are preselected based on excellence and compatibility of the proposed projects.
In June 2006 the project started with a 3-weeks-visit of PhD students from CeNS in Montreal where they attended courses on nanosciences (1 week) and performed lab work under the guidance of their local partners (2 weeks). During this time, various experiments ranging from Ultra High Vacuum Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) to the synthesis of nanocrystals were carried out. In autumn 2006, the exchange students from Montréal came to Munich for hands-on experiments at CeNS labs and one week of lectures at the CeNS workshop "Emerging Nanosystems - From Quantum Manipulation to Nanobiomachines" in Venice.
In 2008, the successful JNN project was repeated with a new generation of PhD students from CeNS and McGill University, following the same organizational scheme as in 2006.
The JNN projects in 2006 and 2008 were financially supported by the cooperation "Bayern-Québec", hosted at the
Bayerisch-Französisches Hochschulzentrum (BFHZ). The 2010 edition of the JNN is funded by the
Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) via the
International Bureau (IB).
