Waveguide Integrated Carbon Nanotube Light Sources

Prof. Ralph Krupke, KIT/TUM Darmstadt

We are interested in developing nanoscale transducers for future on‑chip data transmission with light and explore the use of carbon nanotubes as active element in photonic circuits. I will show how light from an electrically driven single-walled carbon nanotube can be coupled directly and efficiently into a photonic waveguide architecture and how waferscale, broadband sources can be realized and integrated with nanophotonic circuits allowing for propagation of light over centimeter distances [1]. I will also show how on-chip single-walled carbon nanotubes emitters can be combined with directional coupling devices as fundamental building blocks for carbon photonic systems [2]. Furthermore I will show how exceptionally narrow emission-linewidths can be achieved by integrating the carbon nanotubes emitter into a nanophotonic cavity [3]. If time allows I will also report on recent measurements on sub-nanosecond pulse generation with waveguide-coupled carbon nanotube transducers [4], and on light emission from nanocrystalline graphene as alternative emitter material [5].

Funding by the Volkswagen Foundation and support by the Helmholtz society through the program STN and by the KNMF is acknowledged.
