Fabrication of nano/microstructures of cuprous oxide by electrodepositi

We report a facile method to fabricate nano/microstructures of cuprous oxide (Cu2O) on different substrates by electrodeposition at room temperature (25oC) using CuSO4 as electrolyte with no additives. The deposited Cu2O nanocrystals were generally of an octahedral shape with sizes ranging from 100nm to 400nm on Si wafer, and 1m to 3m on stainless steel substrates respectively. Flower-like crystal structures are observed for the first time under an acidic medium, and these are believed to be the transient states of the final octahedral shape. With different transient crystal structures found, a growth mechanism is proposed. With different deposition parameters, Cu2O nanowires were successfully deposited on highly orientated pyrolytic graphite (HOPG). Apart from the cathode, similar octahedral Cu2O nanocrystals were also found to deposit on the Cu anode used. This technique therefore allows the fabrication of nanostructures on both electrodes in a single step.
